Brisbane, Australia, 6 April 2023 – New technology that pushes the boundaries of far UVC LEDs to emit at shorter wavelengths, at higher power, and with longer lifetimes, will be presented by Silanna UV at the International Conference on UV LED Technologies & Applications (ICULTA) in Berlin, Germany from April 23 to 26, 2023.

New UV-C LED technology

This revolutionary UVC LED technology from Silanna UV offers huge advantages for applications as diverse as disinfection, water quality monitoring, gas sensing, liquid chromatography, and chemical and biological analysis.

Old-fashioned AlGaN-based far UVC LEDs in general suffer from poor carrier injection, low light emission and high drive voltage, due to the inherit limitations of high Al-content AlGaN.

Silanna’s new short period superlattice (SPSL) far UVC LED structure helps overcome these issues. In a SPSL device, composed of repeating layers of AlN and GaN, the presence of GaN maintains the TE dominance of the emission as well as lowering the activation energy of donors, resulting in more efficient devices compared to LEDs made with the conventional AlGaN technology. Furthermore, the emission wavelength can be easily tuned using the thickness of the GaN well, a process that is significantly easier to control than tuning of Al composition in the barrier and well.

Silanna UV Introduces TO-Can Package Format for 235nm and 255nm UV-C LEDs

High-performance, hermetically sealed packages ideal for sensing applications

Brisbane, Australia, 18 January, 2023 – Silanna UV is pleased to announce the release of two new products in its SF1 235nm and SN3 255nm series of UV-C LEDs: the SF1-3T9B5L1 and the SN3-5T9B5L1.

Silanna UV's new UV-C LEDs feature the Transistor Outline (TO-can) package format, which consists of a header and a cap that together form a hermetically sealed package. This innovative design protects sensitive semiconductor components within the package. The header supplies power to the encapsulated components, while the cap enables the transmission of optical signals. The strong weld between the cap and the header provides hermetic protection to the die, and the ball lens offers a narrow viewing angle for the high irradiance required in most sensing applications.

An industrial standard TO-39 footprint, using a steel header with a gold coating. These devices have ESD protection and contain no mercury. The TO-39 package has an 18-degree viewing angle enhancing radiant intensity and measurement resolution.

SF1-3T9B5L1: SF1 235nm Far UV-C LED

The SF1-3T9B5L1 is a far UV-C emitting device with a peak wavelength of 235nm, making it effective for water quality detection of Nitrate (NO3) and Nitrite (NO2), gas detection of Carbon dioxide (CO2), and liquid chromatography.

SN3-5T9B5L1: SN3 255nm Deep UV-C LED

The SN3-5T9B5L1 is a powerful deep UV-C LED with a peak wavelength of 255nm, making it effective for water quality detection of COD (chemical oxygen demand) and TOC (total organic carbon), as well as gas detection for Ozone (O3) and medical analyzers. It has a high optical output power, making it suitable for a range of applications including chemical and biological analysis, water quality monitoring, gas sensing, and liquid chromatography.

High stability and performance UV-C LEDs

Both the SF1-3T9B5L1 and SN3-5T9B5L1 offer excellent stability and performance, with less than 0.5 percent drift and fluctuation in a steady state. They are also compatible with off-the-shelf optical systems, making them a convenient and reliable choice for sensing applications.

Silanna UV Makes Ultraviolet LED Manufacturing Breakthrough With Nanostructures

Easy wavelength tuning, higher power at short wavelengths, and exceptional lifetime performance

Brisbane, Australia, 15 September, 2022 – A major breakthrough in UV-C LED technology from Silanna UV offers huge advantages for applications as diverse as disinfection, water quality monitoring, gas sensing, liquid chromatography, and chemical and biological analysis. The new manufacturing approach promises to make deep ultraviolet and far ultraviolet LEDs easier to make, more efficient at shorter wavelengths, and more reliable. With the renewed focus on air, water and surface disinfection following the Covid-19 pandemic, these next-generation UV LEDs are already attracting interest.

Silanna UV’s groundbreaking patented short period superlattice (SPSL) approach overcomes many of the difficulties that plague competing AlGaN UV-C LED technologies. In essence, Silanna UV has effectively created a new material, a nanostructure, which is much easier to control and has properties that are far superior to traditional AlGaN. The benefits for UV-C LED quality are revolutionary.

Moving beyond traditional UV LEDs

For years, UV-C LED manufacturers have relied on traditional AlGaN Aluminum Gallium Nitride alloy) formulas. In theory, by adjusting the ratio of aluminum and gallium metal in the alloy lattice, the bandgap can be tuned to produce UV emissions from 340 nm to 210 nm, covering most of the UV spectrum. But in reality, emission below 260nm require high Al-content AlGaN, which, unlike GaN, makes it very difficult to achieve desirable n and p-type doping, particularly at the shortest wavelengths, leading to poor electrical performance. High-Al content AlGaN also suffers from light extraction issues due to the polarization of emitted light, causing significant loss of light output, particularly in the far UV range below 240nm

Silanna UV’s breakthrough SPSL material

To overcome these problems in UV LEDs, Silanna UV uses new technology. Instead of the common AlGaN method, Silanna UV uses SPSL.

In this approach, rather than using a crude old-fashioned ternary alloy, alternating layers of AlN and GaN (as many as several hundred layers) are meticulously built up to create a so-called SPSL. Unlike a traditional ternary alloy, this SPSL’s key properties – including bandgap and conductivity – can be finely tuned by simply adjusting the thickness of the constituent layers. This means that the issues caused by High-Al content AlGaN are mitigated – in particular, that older method’s poor electrical characteristics and short wavelength light-loss.

The SPSL technology gives Silanna UV huge advantages over UV-C LED competitors, including the maintenance of high power at shorter wavelengths, superior electrical properties, and outstanding lifetime performance.

AnyPort is an innovative new architecture that gives designers the flexibility to complete a charger design for a given power level prior to specifying and configuring the specific number and type of output ports. By allowing a single base charger design to be deployed across a variety of end products with different output configurations, AnyPort can significantly speed the development and reduce the complexity of fast chargers and adapters with multiple Type-C and/or Type-A [four] output ports.

AnyPort brings together Silanna’s CO2 Smart Power™ families of advanced ACF controllers and high-frequency DC/DC converters to deliver high-power-density, ultra-efficient, multi-port charger solutions for USB-PD applications between 30W and 150W. The ability to specify port count and type at the end of the design process is made possible by combining a fixed-output front-end AC/DC stage powered by Silanna Semicondcutor’s ACF controller and multiple downstream DC/DC stages independently regulating any number of Type-C and Type-A ports.

AnyPort was first deployed in Silanna Semiconductor’s RD-5 all-silicon reference design, a production-ready solution that provides everything an engineer needs to rapidly prototype and test a fully functional 65W 2C charger. High-efficiency all-silicon 65W 2C AnyPort™ reference design combines industry’s most integrated ACF controllers with highest power density DC/DC converters

Bringing together the company’s CO2 Smart Power™ families of advanced ACF controllers and high-frequency DC/DC converters, the new AnyPort™ RD-5 delivers a high-power-density, ultra-efficient, production-ready solution for multi-port 65W USB-PD applications.

Representing the latest addition to Silanna’s growing family of silicon- and GaN-based fast charger reference designs, the RD-5 is an all-silicon solution that will simplify and speed charger development by providing everything an engineer needs to rapidly prototype and test a fully functional 65W 2C unit. The design, which combines Silanna’s SZ1130 fully-integrated AC/DC active clamp flyback (ACF) controller and two of the company’s SZPL3102 DC/DC converters, provides a cased power density of 11.4W/inch3 and operates with an end-to-end peak efficiency in excess of 91.5%. Efficiency is quite flat across the universal input voltage range (90 – 265Vac). Because the design exceeds conducted and radiated EMI requirements by more than 6dB it eliminates the need for pre-production validation and certification, speeding up the production cycle.

Supplied as a fully production-ready solution, the new RD-24 design provides everything needed to rapidly prototype and test a fully functional 45W 1C charger.

The RD-24 delivers fast charging performance while minimizing overall energy consumption by combining the industry’s best operating efficiency with the lowest ‘vampire’ power consumption. Providing an (uncased) power density of 23.5W/inch3 from a cost-effective single PCB design, the RD-24 operates with a peak efficiency of above 92% and no-load power consumption of below 20mW. Efficiency is flat across the universal input voltage range (90 – 265Vac).

At the heart of the latest reference design is Silanna’s ultra-high-efficiency COSmart Power™  SZ1131 active clamp flyback (ACF) controller, which is rated for powers up to 65W in universal input designs and above 100W in PFC supported applications. Featuring the company’s latest CO2 Smart Power™ ACF controller technology, the Silanna Semiconductor RD-31 provides a route to delivering performance that matches or exceeds that of many commercially available 65W GaN-based chargers at a cost more readily associated with conventional silicon designs.

The RD-31 is the latest in a family of production-ready reference designs that provide everything needed to prototype and develop a fully functional charger with low operational and no-load/ stand-by power consumption and minimum component count, BOM cost and size. This family includes all-silicon 33W and GaN-based 65W USB-PD reference designs.

As with the company’s existing 65W GaN and 33W silicon reference designs, Silanna’s new RD-31 is based on the ultra-high-efficiency SZ1131 ACF controller, which is rated for 65W and above 100W operation in universal input and PFC applications, respectively. This controller offers the industry’s highest level of integration by incorporating an adaptive digital PWM controller, ultra-high-voltage (UHV) active clamp FET, active clamp gate driver and startup regulator into a single compact device.

Providing an (uncased) power density of 30W/inch3, the RD-31 operates with a peak efficiency of around 94% and has a no-load power consumption below 25mW. Efficiency is flat across the universal input voltage range (90 – 265Vac) and the reference design is fully production-ready as it exceeds conducted and radiated EMI requirements by more than 6dB. In benchmarking tests the RD-31 exceeded the efficiency of the best-in-class commercially available GaN-based power adapter by 0.5% and reduced no-load vampire power by as much as 44%.
