Silanna Semiconductor Reference Design Supports Development of Industry’s Most Efficient All-Silicon 33W 1C Chargers
Active Clamp Flyback (ACF) design offers performance in excess of commercially available 30W GaN adapters
San Diego, CA – 3rd January, 2022 – Silanna Semiconductor, The Power Density Leader, has launched a new active clamp flyback (ACF)-based reference design that simplifies and speeds the development of 33W 1C fast charger applications built using silicon power FETs. Featuring the company’s latest SZ1131 CO2 Smart Power™ ACF controller technology, the Silanna Semiconductor RD-23 provides a route to delivering performance that matches or exceeds that of commercially available 30W GaN-based chargers at a cost more readily associated with conventional silicon designs.
Silanna’s new RD-23 incorporates everything an engineer needs to prototype and develop a fully functional charger with low operational and no-load/ stand-by power consumption and minimum component count, BOM cost and size. RD-23 uses the SZ1131 – Silanna Semiconductor’s newest ACF controller, which is rated for 65W for Universal input and above 100W with PFC-supported applications. This controller offers the industry’s highest level of integration by incorporating an adaptive digital PWM controller, ultra-high-voltage (UHV) active clamp FET, active clamp gate driver and startup regulator into a single compact device.
Providing an (uncased) power density of 22W/inch3, the RD-23 operates with a peak efficiency of over 92% and has a no-load power consumption (@ 230Vac) below 20mW. Efficiency is flat across the universal input (90 – 265Vac) input range and the reference design is fully production-ready as it exceeds conducted and radiated EMI requirements by more than 6dB margins.

The SZ1131 operates at frequencies of up to 146kHz and provides the ease-of-design of a simple flyback controller with all the benefits of an ACF design. This includes recycling the leakage inductance energy of the flyback transformer and limiting the primary FET drain voltage spike during turn-off events. Employing Silanna Semiconductor’s OptiModeTMdigital control architecture, the SZ1131 adjusts the device’s mode of operation on a cycle-by-cycle basis to maintain high efficiency, low EMI, fast dynamic load regulation, and other key power supply parameters in response to varying line voltage and load.
Supplied in a 16-pin SOIC package, the SZ1131 offers protection against over-temperature, over-voltage, over-current, over-power and short circuit conditions, as well as transformer core saturation fault without the need for additional external components.

Elementech Chooses Silanna Semiconductor CO2 Smart Power™ AC/DC Active Clamp Flyback Technology for Ultra-Compact High-Speed 65W USB-PD Adapter
Up to 40% smaller than competing 65W charging products thanks to the industry’s highest integration and highest operational efficiency PWM Controller
San Diego, CA – Date – Silanna Semiconductor, The Power Density Leader, has announced that Elementech, the Taiwanese power, networking, and peripheral specialist, has chosen Silanna’s SZ1130 AC/DC active clamp flyback (ACF) controller for its latest 65W dual-port (2C) USB-PD high-speed charger. Because the SZ1130 combines industry-leading levels of integration with ultra-high-efficiency operation, the new compact, lightweight Elementech charger is up to 40% smaller than other 65W USB-PD products currently on the market.
The SZ1130 is the world’s first fully digital ACF controller and is a member of Silanna’s CO2 Smart Power™ family of AC/DC and DC/DC technologies. These technologies address the ultimate power management challenge facing engineers by simplifying design, reducing product size and improving performance while meeting environmental and sustainability goals through more efficient energy use. The SZ1130 has an operational efficiency above 94% and no-load power below 50mW which reduces overall energy consumption. Integration of an adaptive digital PWM controller, an active clamp FET, active clamp gate driver and startup regulator keeps size and BoM to a minimum.
Elementech’s new CCA-20V65W USB-PD adapter has dimensions of just 51mm x 44mm x 35mm, giving it a (cased) power density of 13.5W/inch3 (0.82W/cm3). The adapter offers a universal power (100Vac – 240Vac) input and has a maximum input current of 1.5A that automatically detects the proper charging current for connected devices. Active power distribution adjusts power sharing between the two ports. Used individually, each port can deliver 65W PD 3.0 charging. Dual-port charging delivers a maximum 63W split between 45W PD3.0 and 18W QC/15W PD. Suitable for use all over the world, the CCA-20V65W is supplied with interchangeable plugs for global compatibility.

Silanna Semiconductor focuses on ultimate power management challenges with devices that combine best-in-class power density and efficiency performance with unprecedented BoM savings. Operating at a switching speed of 667kHz, the SZDL3105B fully-integrated DC/DC converter (buck regulator) can supply up to 5 amps and 100 watts of output power. It accommodates industry-leading wide input and output ranges that support up to 27VDC input and is supplied in a tiny 4mm x 4mm QFN package.

The SZDL3105B has unique features that optimize its performance in USB port power supply applications. Extremely low operating power dissipation enables the very low no-load power that is an important specification for regulatory certification. Internal and external feedback resistor divider flexibility supports custom design, while a momentary internal feedback path allows for clean and well-controlled start-up operation until external USB port controllers can bias themselves and smoothly take over control of the output voltage.

Silanna Semiconductor and GaN Systems partner to co-design a revolutionary 65W reference design.
San Diego, CA – March 10th, 2021- Silanna Semiconductor, The Power Density Leader, today announced their partnership with GaN Systems by launching a co-designed, world-class 65W USB-C GaN (gallium nitride) charger featuring Silanna Semiconductor’s Fully Integrated Active Clamp Flyback PWM Controller, the SZ1130 with GaN System’s 650V Power GaN Transistor. Silanna Semiconductor’s technology-agnostic design focuses on the ultimate power management challenges with the best-in-class power density (30W/in3 uncased) and efficiency (>94%) that delight customers with unprecedented BoM savings.
The full production of Silanna’s Active Clamp Flyback (ACF) controllers started in mid-2020 and is continuing to enable higher efficiency and higher power density adapter designs. The versatility of Silanna Semiconductor's ACF controller allows design flexibility for the end-user to select their preferred FET technology within their reference design. The new 65W USB-C GaN charger reference design utilizes Silanna Semiconductor’s SZ1130 Fully Integrated ACF PWM controller, with the high-side FET integrated into the controller. The ACF architecture reduces BOM cost by integrating the ACF circuit. In addition, the reference design uses lower-cost components, including conventional RM8 transformer, 100V SR FET, minimal clamp capacitor, and a single common mode choke in the input filter, resulting in an attractive design for power supply technology companies to utilize within their products.

Silanna Semiconductor Delivers Full Production ramp of 33W Flyback PWM Controllers with Integrated Active Clamp Circuits
San Diego, CA –February 9, 2021 – Silanna Semiconductor, The Power Density Leader, today announced the full production release of the industry-leading expanded portfolio of Active Clamp Flyback Controllers (ACF). Silanna Semiconductor focuses on the ultimate Power Management challenges with the best-in-class power density and efficiency that delight customers with unprecedented BoM savings. First announced in April 2020, Silanna Semiconductor has achieved full production release of the SZ1110, a 33W Integrated Active Clamp Flyback Controller, delivering on the customer expectations and market penetration by dominating the ACF market.
The SZ1110 devices are Active Clamp Flyback PWM Controllers that are rated for up to 33W output power and integrate an adaptive digital PWM controller and the following Ultra High-Voltage (UHV) components: An Active Clamp FET, Active Clamp Gate Driver and a Startup Regulator. This unprecedented level of integration facilitates designing efficient, high-power-density adapters with low BoM cost to satisfy power-hungry mobile phones, tablets, notebooks and video game consoles.
The SZ1110 (33W) alongside the SZ1130 (65W) which was announced in full production last year has seen exceptional customer demand and continues to grow. The technical sales team has been working directly with customers’ designs demonstrating the ACF controllers, delivering over 94% efficiency from an all-silicon design, while achieving 30W/in3 power density at 65W using SZ1130 and 21.5 W/in3 power density at 30W using SZ1110, for universal input AC/DC power adapters.

The devices provide the ease-of-design of a simple flyback controller with all the benefits of an ACF design, including recycling of the leakage inductance energy of the flyback transformer and limiting the primary FET drain voltage spike during the turn-off events. Employing Silanna’s OptiModeTM digital control architecture, the SZ1110 and SZ1130 adjust the device’s mode of operation on a cycle-by-cycle basis to maintain high efficiency, low EMI, fast dynamic load regulation and other key power supply parameters in response to varying line voltage and load.
